Decisions, decisions......

Someone hasn't been keeping up with their blog.......

Hypothetical situation:

Two students are in the same class. Both are seniors and have applied to colleges that require passing your class.

Student A has consistently performed to the best of his ability but unfortunately cannot get higher than a 50% on tests. Student A attends tutor sessions, does all his homework, asks questions in class, and has a strong work ethic. Because of his hard work, he's averaging a 58% overall in the class (tests account for a large part of the grade).

Student B has a very weak work ethic. Homework is rarely completed. Attendance and tardies are a problem. Student B sleeps during class and comes to class unprepared. However his test scores are 65% . But because he has terrible work habits, he also is averaging a 58% in the class.

Who do you think (if any) is going to pass?

Okay, so my daughter Jillian is in a similar situation in her math class. She got one B on a test and missed two homework assignments. Because the teacher weights the tests there is no posibility for her to get an A in the class now. The two missed HWs are on her, but why should one B on a test be so insurmountable? Why do you all weight the tests so heavily? What is the reasoning behind it? With that being said and my bias showing like a neon Vegas sign let me vote for the student with the good work ethic.

Neither. They both earned a 58%.

Be objective - it's a math class.

This does not mean they will not graduate high school - it only says that they need the class to get into the college they want to get into. We don't always get what we want! And there are other colleges and opportunities for students like these.
